My name is Ricky Altieri. I graduated from Amherst College in 2015 with a degree in philosophy. I’ve always had a passion for comedy and culture, and Amherst allowed me to deepen my understanding of both. While there, I was member of Amherst College’s improv group and served as an editor of the campus satire publication. I also pursued academic work that dealt with comedic sensibilities across time periods and cultures.
This coming here, on a Watson fellowship, I’ll have a chance to explore the relationship between comedy and culture more deeply. I’ll do so both by speaking with comedians and performing myself. To do comedy, John Selig has said, “All you need is a bus pass and a passion for failure.” I’ve already got one of those things. And I figure that, whenever I go, I can manage to buy a bus pass.
